Art historian James van Dyke of the University of Missouri-Columbia considers the meaning of the technique of silverpoint drawing in Otto Dix’s scenes of sex and violence during and after 1933. In particular, he asks whether two portraits made and exhibited in Berlin in 1935 can be seen as sly responses to both Dix’s critics and Nazi ideology in general. Conversation continues over a light lunch in the lobby. Presented as part of the series Off the Wall: Informal Discussions About Art. Sponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art and the Committee on the Arts. Lunch is provided.
