Description

Part history class, part film festival, Town Hall Theater’s Director in Residence Doug Anderson takes you through the glorious history of the Hollywood musical.  Each session will begin with Doug lecturing about the studios, the directors and the stars who defined each era, followed by one of the key films of those years.

Part 1 of this popular course explored films from 1930-1950. Doug began each class with a lecture on the developments in technology and taste that shaped the movie musical’s Golden Age.  (If you missed Part 1, don’t worry; Doug will begin Part 2 with a recap of important early films and ideas.)

Part 2 will pick up where we left off.  In the 1950s, the old studio system began to crumble, and as the country entered the turbulent 1960s the movie musical found itself searching for new directions and new audiences. Once again, Doug will open each class with a lecture putting each film into its historical context, followed by a showing of the film on the big screen.

As Doug says, “This course is part history class, part film festival, and all of it is immensely entertaining.”

All classes are on Wednesday evenings beginning at 7:00 pm:
February 11 – A Star Is Born (1954 – Judy Garland, James Mason) (Rothrock Mainstage)
February 18 – Funny Girl (1968 – Barbra Streisand) (Anderson Studio)
February 25 – Cabaret (1972 – Liza Minelli, Joel Gray) (Rothrock Mainstage)
March 4 – Highlights from the 1970’s to today (Anderson Studio)
