Feb 7 - Apr 20 Performance Now |
A selection of works by artists who practice a variety of art-making procedures, Performance Now features videos, objects, films, and installations that document ephemeral occurrences. Including works by Marina Abramovic, William Kentridge, Clifford Owens, and Laurie Simmons, among many others, the exhibition surveys critical and experimental currents in this historically significant, global development in art practice. Performance Now is a traveling exhibition produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York; and by Performa, New York. The curator for the exhibition is RoseLee Goldberg, artistic director and founder of Performa. The exhibition and tour are made possible, in part, by grants from the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation; the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; the ICI Board of Trustees; and donors to ICI's Access Fund. At Middlebury the exhibit is supported by funds from the Christian A. Johnson Memorial Foundation. |

Apr 21 Solar Home: Heating and Cooling from SunCommon |
Background: Solar Home Heating and Cooling allows Vermonters to heat and cool their homes with clean, fossil-free energy at about 1/3 the cost of heating fuel. Combing solar power with heat pump technology can reduce a home’s use of traditional heating fuels by as much as 80% and can cut heating bills by half. Moreover, in the summer the system can be reversed and provide ultra-efficient air conditioning and dehumidifying. Guilt-free cooling!
This workshop will cover the basics of solar power and heat pumps: how they fit into our state's energy plans, how the technologies work, what government incentives are available, how our "no upfront cost" program works, and more.

Apr 26 Elena |
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Festival, Elena is a triumphant return for director Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return, The Banishment). In Moscow, Elena and Vladimir are an older couple from different social backgrounds: he is a wealthy businessman, while she comes from a more modest, working-class background. When Vladimir suffers a heart attack, Elena enacts a daring plan to save her family's future. "Zvyagintsev spins a taut, engrossing yarn about a coveted inheritance, cruel class differences and quietly monstrous misdeeds"-Justin Chang, Variety. In Russian with English subtitles. Sponsored by the Department of Russian. (Andrey Zvyagintsev, Russia, 2011, 109 minutes) |

Apr 26 Tricky Britches return to Brandon Music |
Tricky Britches is the product of mountain music, rockabilly, and country swing all thrown together, to create something uniquely uplifting. "In an age of auto-tune and manufactured music, Tricky Britches isn't just a throwback--they're a look forward. We can comfort ourselves in the warm embrace of three-part harmonies, fire-breathing fiddle and mandolin licks, and the thump-thump to the gut of a stand-up bass." A pre-concert dinner is available by reservation. |

Apr 30 - May 3 In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) |
From his 1880s parlor and consulting room, Dr. Givings specializes in treating women for 'hysteria' with the help of the latest technology: the electric vibrator. When a new patient piques Mrs. Givings's curiosity about the groundbreaking treatment ministered in the next room, she is forced to confront the limits of her marriage and to listen to the music of her own body. An elegant comedy lit by unexpected sparks from the approaching era of electricity, psychoanalysis, and suffragettes, In the Next Room confirms Sarah Ruhl's status as one of the most imaginative contemporary American playwrights. Directed by Cláudio Medeiros '90. For mature audiences. Post-show discussion Friday evening. Sponsored by the Theatre Program. For mature audiences. Post-show discussion, Friday night only: Join the cast, director, and designers after the show for a Q&A session about the production and the creative journey leading up to it. |
