May 23 - Aug 10    Life's a Beach
Magnum photographer Martin Parr is renowned for capturing people in their own private comfort zones and introducing them, in all their quirky eccentricity, to a global audience. This extensive series of photographs shot on beaches around the world offers an engaging and vivid social commentary about the vast variety of human behavior that can be found anywhere under the sun. This exhibition is organized by the Aperture Foundation, New York. At Middlebury, it is supported by funds from the Christian A. Johnson Memorial Foundation.

Jun 21 - Aug 31    The Roots of Rock 'n' Roll Exhibit
As part of this summer's town-wide "Brandon Rocks On" theme, the Compass Music and Arts Center traces the birth of rock and roll music from 1955 up to the "British Invasion" of the Beatles and other groups in 1964. Clothing, record players and other artifacts from the period will help bring back plenty of memories for everyone who grew up in those fast changing times, while younger generations will be introduced to a time before iPods and mobile music.

Jul 2 - Dec 7    Visual Weimar, 1919-1933
This exhibit brings together select paintings, drawings, and etchings by some of Weimar Germany's most prominent artists, including Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz. The works confront the viewer with representations of this highly visual culture in Germany's first democracy and the productive and sometimes problematic relationship between criticizing and participating in a culture that could not prevent its people from falling for Hitler's Germany under the Swastika.

Jul 10    Beginning East Coast Swing Dancing
Learn East Coast Swing Dancing at this workshop for beginners, taught by David Allan of Green Mountain Stomp Swing Dancing. Held on July 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st from 7:30-8:30pm. Registration begins at 7pm on the 10th. No partner or previous dance experience is needed and all ages are welcome. $40 for adults for all 4 sessions or $35 for senior citizens and kids 18 and under. Frieda Post's life experiences and passion for learning new techniques in arts and crafts has led her to become an artist of engaging contemporary, as well as traditional paintings. Creating contemporary and traditional art allows Frieda to express the beauty of nature, as she sees and feels it. She says, "There is no right or wrong way. We learn from the past and build upon it." Now she employs a wide variety of techniques in her paintings, gathered from a lifetime of learning and exploring.

Jul 12    Maple Jam performs at Brandon Music
Maple Jam is Vermont's own a cappella jazz octet, specializing in Grade A Fancy vocal arrangements of sweet love songs and swinging big band favorites. With their trademark rich blend of voices and smooth jazz harmonies, their repertoire ranges from classic jazz and swing to pop and ballads.

ART ON THE GREEN is Middlebury Studio School's 9th annual Craft Fair fund raiser. We will be on the town green by St. Stephen's Church. Our instructors and students will be selling their work. Also, Vermont artists from around the state will participate. We'll have local favorites like: Julia Emilo-painted gourds, Stacie Mincher-zipper art, Bob Weaver-wood, John Geery-Photography, Jeri Canfield-quilts, Barb Nelson-jewelry as well as other fine craftsmen and artists from around Vermont. There will be art activities for children. Also, a pottery wheel to try and a chance to win a free class.

Jul 20    Addison County Architecture in 1814
The Robinsons doubled the size of their home 200 years ago, adding a restrained Federal style addition. Art historian Glenn Andres will help us celebrate with an illustrated tour of neighboring buildings in 1814. Professor Andres' new book "The Buildings of Vermont" will be available for sale and signing.
