Jul 2 - Dec 7    Visual Weimar, 1919-1933
This exhibit brings together select paintings, drawings, and etchings by some of Weimar Germany's most prominent artists, including Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz. The works confront the viewer with representations of this highly visual culture in Germany's first democracy and the productive and sometimes problematic relationship between criticizing and participating in a culture that could not prevent its people from falling for Hitler's Germany under the Swastika.

Oct 12    New Haven Farm & Food Festival
Several New Haven food-related businesses are organizing the 2nd annual New Haven Farm and Food Festival to be held on Sunday, October 12, between 12:00 and 4:00 pm.

This will be a non-profit, community-wide event, and we hope to include as many farms and food producers as possible in order to showcase the surprising diversity of the many food-related activities taking place in New Haven these days.

This year’s event will take place on the lovely deck and grounds of Lester Farm.  The plan is for the festival to be hosted at a different venue each year – farm, vineyard, orchard, etc.

Each participant will have the opportunity to sell, sample, and display products.  A buffet lunch will be prepared by chef Bill Snell consisting of ingredients provided by participating farmers.  If you don’t want to stand at a table or booth, just send in some products and tell us about yourself.  We will do the rest.  We would like everyone to be represented.

The festival will be free and open to the public.  There will be a modest charge for the buffet lunch.  There will also be music and entertainment, as well as many fun farm-related activities and demonstrations including hayrides, a petting zoo, and more, depending on the weather.

Our current list of participants, in addition to Tourterelle, includes Smith Family Farm, Misty Knoll Farm, Olivia’s Croutons, Lincoln Peak Vineyard, Open View Farm, Lester Farm, Happy Valley Orchards, and Green Pasture Meats.  If you have cheese, corn, pumpkins, squash, potatoes, honey, syrup, apples, grain, herbs, beverages, or other food products, we hope you will join in.

Oct 18    The Selfish Giant
Loosely based on a fable by Oscar Wilde and updated to present-day England, The Selfish Giant is about two scrappy 13-year-old working-class friends who tangle with a local scrap dealer and criminal, with tragic consequences. "So hauntingly perfect is Barnard's film, and so skin-pricklingly alive does it make you feel to watch it, that at first you can hardly believe the sum of what you have seen"-Robbie Collin, The Telegraph. Oct 29    Ambiguity, Inquiry, Dialogue: The Visual Thinking Strategies Teaching Method and Higher Education
Curator and educator Dabney Hailey will facilitate a discussion about an artwork to demonstrate the teaching method, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). She then will address some key questions: What is visual thinking (or visual literacy), why does it matter, and how might it be developed in undergraduate students? How can open-ended, rigorous discussions about art, such as VTS conversations, enable academic museums to more effectively meet and influence curricular needs across disciplines? Describing the ways in which VTS cultivates the process of inquiry, creates comfort with ambiguity, and fosters collaboration, Hailey will draw on her experiences applying the method in a range of classes (Anthropology, Biology, Business, Neuroscience, Philosophy, and Public Policy, among others) at Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum. Sponsored by the Museum of Art and the Department of History of Art and Architecture.  The Museum will remain open until 7:00 PM for post-lecture visitors. Free

Oct 29    Cameron Visiting Artist Talk: Rico Gatson
Over the course of almost two decades, Rico Gatson has become celebrated for his confrontational and politically opinionated artworks, often based on significant moments in black history. Images of riots, fires, and confinement pervade his works, which have touched on a range of subjects like the Watts Riots, the presidential election of Barack Obama, and the formation of the Black Panthers. As Gatson once said: "I'm always interested in seducing the viewer and then hitting them on the way out, allowing a delayed response to powerfully charged content". Even though he uses painting, video, sculpture, and installation, Gatson prefers not to be defined by any single medium, rather thinking of himself as an object maker inspired by Conceptualism and Performance Art.
