Mar 10 - Apr 11    In Champlain's Wake: Trapping Boats of the Lake Champlain Basin, exhibit at Sheldon Museum

In Champlain’s Wake: Trapping Boats of the Lake Champlain Basin represents an innovative research partnership with the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, a technical, workplace and continuing educational school for secondary and adult students, also located in Middlebury.

The exhibit showcases the work of thirteen high school students who researched the traditions of trapping and boatbuilding in the Champlain Valley.  Under the direction of Vergennes-based boatbuilder Douglas Brooks and Hannaford’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education) instructor Jake Burnham, the students conducted interviews with trappers, measured historic trapping boats, built replica boats, and produced detailed drawings, undertaking a much-needed comprehensive documentation of vernacular Lake Champlain small watercaft.
This exhibit includes one historic trapping boat from Addison County and a student-built replica, along with traps, a push pole, stretching boards for animal pelts, historic photographs of trappers, as well as a video highlighting the student activities throughout the semester, along with excerpts from the trapper interviews. For more information, visit www.HenrySheldonMuseum.org or call 802-388-2117.

Mar 17    "The Empty Room and the End of Man", Guest Speaker: Robert Slifkin
During the 1960s and early 1970s many artists in the United States created works that through their monumental scale, use of refracted light, and architectonic enclosures encouraged viewers to engage in an expansively spatial manner so that the gallery itself became an aesthetically-charged site. Many of the original viewers of these works experienced these unconventional, frequently austere, and affectless objects and installations as threatening and even aggressive. Drawing upon the original reception of some of the most significant public exhibitions of minimal and postminimal art (taking the work of William Anastasi, Dan Flavin, Robert Barry, and Bruce Nauman as key examples) this paper will argue that these works and "environments"  (to use a word often invoked around such art) produced experiential situations that served as imaginary figurations of what the world would look and feel like without human inhabitation or if the viewer was the last person on the Earth. Yet the works characteristically Spartan simplicity and attention to raw materiality also figured a possible future world uncluttered by unnecessary possessions, a world, according to theorists like Buckminster Fuller and Herbert Marcuse, that would distribute resources equitably and thus make warfare obsolete. By creating works that imagine uninhabitable or empty physical spaces or, through their massive size or spatial expansiveness, encourage a mode of spectatorship and photographic reproduction that occludes other people, these works channeled a larger cultural anxiety concerning the threat of nuclear annihilation and the need for economic and political justices that fundamentally inflected, however unconsciously, significant realms of postwar American culture well into the 1970s.

Mar 19 - Apr 3    Line in Space: Just a Corner of Your Memory Palace
Students from Sanford Mirling's fall class, Sculpture I: Communicating in Three Dimensions, exhibit works focused on the limitless, form-making possibilities of welded-steel rod. While tackling elemental aesthetic issues of balance, volume, perspective, and scale, each sculpture provides a glimpse into the artist's own personal narrative. As a collection, these pieces represent earnest experiments in translating two dimensions into three and memories into new realities.
