Mar 10 - Apr 11    In Champlain's Wake: Trapping Boats of the Lake Champlain Basin, exhibit at Sheldon Museum

In Champlain’s Wake: Trapping Boats of the Lake Champlain Basin represents an innovative research partnership with the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, a technical, workplace and continuing educational school for secondary and adult students, also located in Middlebury.

The exhibit showcases the work of thirteen high school students who researched the traditions of trapping and boatbuilding in the Champlain Valley.  Under the direction of Vergennes-based boatbuilder Douglas Brooks and Hannaford’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education) instructor Jake Burnham, the students conducted interviews with trappers, measured historic trapping boats, built replica boats, and produced detailed drawings, undertaking a much-needed comprehensive documentation of vernacular Lake Champlain small watercaft.
This exhibit includes one historic trapping boat from Addison County and a student-built replica, along with traps, a push pole, stretching boards for animal pelts, historic photographs of trappers, as well as a video highlighting the student activities throughout the semester, along with excerpts from the trapper interviews. For more information, visit www.HenrySheldonMuseum.org or call 802-388-2117.

Mar 10 - Apr 11    The Museum as Muse for Six Vermont Poets: ?No Ideas but in Things? exhibit at Sheldon Museum
Six Vermont poets, members of Spring Street Poets Workshop of Addison County Vermont, searched Middlebury’s Sheldon Museum’s galleries and storerooms and were inspired. The result is a curated exhibition of artifacts selected by the poets, the poems they triggered. The participating authors are Spring Street Poets’ founder David Weinstock and contributing members Janet Fancher, Kari Hansen, Ray Hudson, Janice Miller Potter, and Mary Pratt.  The inspirational treasures selected by them range from a 19th century women’s corset and bustle, a memorial wreath of human hair, fine and folk art paintings and portraits, a wooden kitchen sink and a wooden flute, a historic marble road sign designating the distance between Vergennes and Middlebury, family diaries, a unique belt of Caribou teeth from the Yukon River, a silk cigar-ribbon quilt, telegraph keys, and antique spectacles.

Apr 2    Lecture: Civic Engagement and the Management of Water Resources ?
Human life depends on the availability and quality of water to sustain our health, grow our food, power our homes with electricity, and stimulate our economies. However, due to overpopulation, increased demand for food, climate change, and pollution, as much as two-thirds of the world's citizens may face water-stressed conditions by 2025. Using the Nile Basin and our Champlain Basin as regional and local case studies, Nile Project founder Mina Girgis, Middlebury Professor of Geology and Environmental Studies Pete Ryan, and Mike Winslow of the Lake Champlain Committee will explore the use of innovative civic engagement strategies to overcome political stakeholder barriers, create a common understanding between competing interests, and build constituencies for action where water has become an impediment to peace and socio-economic development. This lecture is offered as part of the Howard E. Woodin Environmental Studies Colloquium. Apr 9 - Apr 11    Venus in Fur
Time TBA! Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale Venus in Fur. Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress, oddly enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas' interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. A mysterious, funny, erotic drama that represents yet another departure for the multifaceted David Ives. Senior 700 work of Caitlin Duffy '15.5 and Senior 500 work of Joelle Mendoza Etchart '15. Rae Smith (War Horse) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of Cavalleria Rusticana, which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of Pagliacci. Eva-Maria Westbroek (Cav) and Patricia Racette (Pag) play the unlucky heroines. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium. Apr 30 - May 2    Spring Awakening
Set in the sexually oppressive culture of late-19th-century Germany, this play by Frank Wedekind captures the seductions that adolescents harbor in their anxious souls: the alluring chant of nihilism, the feral impulses toward violence, and the thought-obliterating joys of sex. At turns poetic, melancholic, violent, and funny, this once-scandalous play will remain relevant as long as the prism of puberty continues to make the world seem strange and terrifying. Directed by Cláudio Medeiros '90; sponsored by the Theatre Program. Post-show discussion on Friday.
