Jun 14 - Oct 25    Exhibit Opening - The Farm: Drawings of Rowland Evans Robinson, 1850 - 1880

At 3:00 that afternoon Gregory Sharrow of the Vermont Folklife Center will be on hand to explore Vermont’s farm legacy in his presentation “Sense of Place.” Sharrow draws on the Folklife Center’s rich collection to examine the fabric of Vermont’s farm culture and distinctive traditions from the early 20th century as he probes its relationship to today’s farms and farmers.

The drawings of Rowland Evans Robinson cover similar territory, but from 150 years earlier. Born to abolitionist parents at Rokeby in 1833, Robinson began to draw as a child. Hankering to “be somebody,” he set off for New York City in his early 20s. He struggled to find work in the illustrated newspapers of the day and eventually succeeded capturing the farm life all around him for the agricultural papers. Those drawings will be on display until the end of October.

Aug 10 - Aug 31    CENSORSHIP - INSTALLATION
CENSORSHIP - Installation by Rachel Baird The cover of the book is torn off. A line of books tacked up onto a blank wall reveal black lines that blot out all the words on the page - but a few remain uncovered. "Censorship" visually tells the story of how misunderstanding or disagreement with artistic statement can generate fear and beget destruction. Groups have always sought to forcefully expunge what they do not understand or appreciate. Throughout time, artists and writers as visionaries have had to grapple with censorship. However, as history has proved, ideas are indelible.

Aug 12    Beneath Fortress Walls
Over 250 years ago French soldiers dug, chiseled, and blasted their way into the very rock of the Ticonderoga peninsula to create a fortress to defend New France. When it was restored in the early 1900s much of what remained from the original fort was entombed beneath the reconstructed walls. This tour will go underneath and inside the fort to visit these areas, off limits to the general public, to see the handiwork of French masons and soldiers who toiled here two centuries ago. Aug 26    Beneath Fortress Walls
Over 250 years ago French soldiers dug, chiseled, and blasted their way into the very rock of the Ticonderoga peninsula to create a fortress to defend New France. Within just a few decades from those first hammer blows New France had fallen a new nation was created and Fort Ticonderoga had fallen into ruin. When it was restored in the early 1900s much of what remained from the original fort was entombed beneath the reconstructed walls. This tour will go underneath and inside the fort to visit these areas, off limits to the general public, to see the handiwork of French masons and soldiers who toiled here two centuries ago. Join Matthew Keagle, Curator of Collections, on a guided tour beneath the walls and into the ground to explore how Fort Ticonderoga was built, and re-built, and how these spaces now support the modern museum. Call 518-585-2821 to make a reservation.

Aug 27 - Aug 30    The Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival
The very first Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF), kicking off August 27-30, celebrates the work of emerging voices in filmmaking. The emphasis at the MNFF is entirely on filmmakers who have created within the past two years either their first or second feature film or first or second short film. All genres are welcome including narrative, documentary, animation and experimental. The firm commitment at the MNFF is to offer a level playing field to new filmmakers, to give audiences throughout the region an opportunity to discover fresh and engaging talent and to give filmmakers a chance to be discovered in a setting that is all about their work. The MNFF closed its window for submissions this past and was thrilled to receive over 320 films from 35 countries, far exceeding initial expectations. The Festival's lineup of films will be announced in early August. The MNFF is screening 95 films at four screening venues throughout town: the Upper and Lower Screening Rooms at Middlebury Marquis, Middlebury College's Dana Auditorium, and the Town Hall Theater which will also function as the Festival's main Box Office. More than 25 filmmakers will attend and answer questions about their work following screenings, and will also be available to meet filmgoers at a variety of pop-up locations around Middlebury. The Festival will offer a variety of parties throughout the weekend, including the open-to-everyone Saturday Night Community Party from 7-10:30pm with live music on the Town Green, as well as several food trucks and beverage tents. To learn more about this exciting event, and to book Festival and Day Passes, check out our website at middfilmfest.org. Individual tickets will be sold beginning at 10am on Friday, and at screening venues 10 minutes before films begin. Thanks, and see you at the Fest in August! -The MNFF Team PS: We need volunteers!
