Jun 14 - Oct 25    Exhibit Opening - The Farm: Drawings of Rowland Evans Robinson, 1850 - 1880

At 3:00 that afternoon Gregory Sharrow of the Vermont Folklife Center will be on hand to explore Vermont’s farm legacy in his presentation “Sense of Place.” Sharrow draws on the Folklife Center’s rich collection to examine the fabric of Vermont’s farm culture and distinctive traditions from the early 20th century as he probes its relationship to today’s farms and farmers.

The drawings of Rowland Evans Robinson cover similar territory, but from 150 years earlier. Born to abolitionist parents at Rokeby in 1833, Robinson began to draw as a child. Hankering to “be somebody,” he set off for New York City in his early 20s. He struggled to find work in the illustrated newspapers of the day and eventually succeeded capturing the farm life all around him for the agricultural papers. Those drawings will be on display until the end of October.

Sep 2    Beyond Bullets and Blades

A unique opportunity to handle original weapons from Fort Ticonderoga's collection to learn how 18th-century arms were made and used. Limited to 5 participants.

How heavy are the muskets, swords, and bayonets that decided the wars of the 18th century? Have you ever wondered how they were made? Beyond Bullets and Blades is a unique experience; an opportunity to go beyond the exhibition case to examine and handle original 18th century weapons with the supervision and knowledge of Fort Ticonderoga's expert staff. The firearms of the 18th century were built by hand, but not the products of quaint blacksmith shops. Industrial methods were used to produce weapons by the thousands to equip soldiers across the globe. Learn how artisans in Europe and America transformed iron, brass, and wood into the weapons that decided empires and revolutions. Feel the bulk and imagine what it was like for the soldiers of the 18th century to carry these very weapons into Battle.

Sep 12    Brown's Raid Battle Re-enactment

Come join us at Fort Ticonderoga, September 12 & 13 to experience all sides of this real life action adventure!

Out of the hazy twilight before dawn on September 18th, 1777 rushed Colonel John Brown’s men, catching the British and Brunswick garrison around Fort Ticonderoga completely by surprise. John Brown, no stranger to dangerous missions, helped engineer the first capture of Ticonderoga in 1775. With the stakes all the higher, he would test his luck again. As General Gates prepared to stop the British advance on Albany, he ordered General Lincoln to divide, divert, and harass General Burgoyne's supply lines back to Canada. Colonel Brown chose his men carefully, allowed first pick of the ragtag patriot force assembled by General Lincoln at Pawlet, Vermont. Massachusetts and Vermont militia men would get their chance to strike a major blow against General Burgoyne’s attack to divide the colonies. Steadying them would be regulars from Colonel Warner’s regiment of Vermonters. Out front, Vermont rangers were to lead the way. Leading the rangers was, Captain Benjamin Whitcomb, a ranger so skilled in his craft he was a wanted man to the British Army.

Rushing down into the LeChute river valley from Lake George landing, Brown’s men captured 330 British prisoners and set 118 American POWs free. Dawn at Fort Ticonderoga would see British Cannons atop Mount Defiance, which forced the American’s to flee that summer, turned on the British garrison itself. British soldiers awoke to the sight of a Brunswick soldier cut in half by a British cannon ball fired by Brown’s men from the summit of that hill. Rearmed with captured British weapons, American POWs got a chance to settle their score shoulder to shoulder with Brown’s militia, regulars, and rangers. Destroying supplies, and livestock, capturing boats, guns, and cannons, Colonel John Brown’s raiders disappeared back up Lake George, jumping into the pages of history.

It all sounds like a Hollywood movie script, but it’s all true! Come join us at Fort Ticonderoga, September 12th& 13th to experience all sides of Brown’s raid and meet the larger than life characters that make up this real-life action adventure.

Sep 13    Brown's Raid Battle Re-enactment

Sep 20    12th Annual TAM Trek
The TAM Trek is a trail race or fun run to raise funds for the Trail Around Middlebury. This trail, a footpath over 16 miles long, encircles the village of Middlebury and links several hundred acres of town land, conserved properties, schools, and other local landmarks. Participation in the 18-mile event is capped at 100 runners so sign up soon to secure your bib! All distances start and finish at Wright Park in Middlebury, Vermont. The 6-mile course is entirely on single-track trail through Wright Park and the Gorge Loop (trail maps available at www.maltvt.org), with around 400 feet of elevation gain and several slightly technical sections. The 18-mile course starts at Wright Park and follows the entire 18-mile TAM route around Middlebury, ending at Wright Park. This challenging loop gains and loses over 1,000 feet in elevation over single- and double-track with several technical sections and some short road sections to connect between trails. There will not be traffic control at road crossings, so runners must use caution when traversing road sections and are encouraged to run against traffic or on sidewalks where available (pavement sections total less than 3 miles). This route includes all of the best aspects of trail running in Vermont: from sweeping vistas of the Champlain Valley and Green Mountains to broad fields with iconic Vermont farmland and stretches of evergreen and hardwood forests. The course will be very well-marked and easy to follow, with several aid stations stocked with [aid station offerings.] Wright Park will be open throughout the event and all participants are encouraged to stay after the run to enjoy refreshments, music and beverages from one of Middlebury's "Tasting Trail" producers. Generous prizes from local sponsors will be awarded to the male and female overall winners of the 18- and 6-mile races. All proceeds from the Annual TAM Trek directly support maintenance of the TAM (Trail Around Middlebury). Your entry helps ensure that this local gem remains well-maintained and available for public use year-round. The Trek is not only a fund-raising event: everyone is encouraged to come show support for participants and to celebrate Middlebury's "Emerald Necklace", here, OR download a form here. Sep 30    Beyond Bullets and Blades

This specialty experience is offered Wednesdays at 2 pm from May to October. Cost is $25. Limited to 5 participants (age 13 and over) per tour. Tours meet in the Mars Education Center Atrium. Must be able to lift 10 - 20 pounds.
