Jun 14 - Oct 25    Exhibit Opening - The Farm: Drawings of Rowland Evans Robinson, 1850 - 1880

At 3:00 that afternoon Gregory Sharrow of the Vermont Folklife Center will be on hand to explore Vermont’s farm legacy in his presentation “Sense of Place.” Sharrow draws on the Folklife Center’s rich collection to examine the fabric of Vermont’s farm culture and distinctive traditions from the early 20th century as he probes its relationship to today’s farms and farmers.

The drawings of Rowland Evans Robinson cover similar territory, but from 150 years earlier. Born to abolitionist parents at Rokeby in 1833, Robinson began to draw as a child. Hankering to “be somebody,” he set off for New York City in his early 20s. He struggled to find work in the illustrated newspapers of the day and eventually succeeded capturing the farm life all around him for the agricultural papers. Those drawings will be on display until the end of October.

Oct 7    Beyond Bullets and Blades

A unique opportunity to handle original weapons from Fort Ticonderoga's collection to learn how 18th-century arms were made and used. Limited to 5 participants.

How heavy are the muskets, swords, and bayonets that decided the wars of the 18th century? Have you ever wondered how they were made? Beyond Bullets and Blades is a unique experience; an opportunity to go beyond the exhibition case to examine and handle original 18th century weapons with the supervision and knowledge of Fort Ticonderoga's expert staff. The firearms of the 18th century were built by hand, but not the products of quaint blacksmith shops. Industrial methods were used to produce weapons by the thousands to equip soldiers across the globe. Learn how artisans in Europe and America transformed iron, brass, and wood into the weapons that decided empires and revolutions. Feel the bulk and imagine what it was like for the soldiers of the 18th century to carry these very weapons into Battle.

This specialty experience is offered Wednesdays at 2 pm from May to October. Cost is $25. Limited to 5 participants (age 13 and over) per tour. Tours meet in the Mars Education Center Atrium. Must be able to lift 10 - 20 pounds.

Oct 8    Public Art and the Environment: Herman de Vries' Wintergräser
Middlebury's public art program marks 50 Years of Environmental Education and Leadership with a work of art by Herman de Vries, the 83 year old Dutch artist who has been making environmental art for as long as Middlebury's Environmental Studies Program has been in existence. For Wintergräser (Winter Grasses), his 2013 work that was recently installed in Franklin Environmental Center, the artist collected grass that had been pressed down by snow and set it into 32 frames. The result is a disarmingly straightforward work of art with a strong poetic quality. De Vries represented the Netherlands at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Presented at the Howard E. Woodin ES Colloquium Series by Pieter Broucke, Director of the Arts at Middlebury. Free

Edgewater Gallery on the Green TJ CUNNINGHAM: landscapes & Still lifes on display in October 2015 Opening Reception: Friday October 9th, 5-7pm Painting Demonstration Saturday October 10th, 1-3pm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the month of October, Edgewater Gallery on the Green is pleased to exhibit TJ Cunningham's latest body of work: Landscapes and Still Lifes, New Haven, Vermont native TJ Cunningham has been painting professionally for the past five years. For an artist still in his twenties, he has created an impressive number of truly stunning pieces. Adept at painting landscapes en plein air, still lifes in the studio, and portraiture, Cunningham declares that he enjoys painting directly from life far more than painting from photographs, " my greatest fulfillment comes from creating through direct observation." As a result, the work he creates feels life like to the viewer. His Vermont scenes, whether of a place familiar to the viewer or not, transport one into that space effortlessly. It's no wonder this young talent has become so highly collected in such a short period of time. "The number of things that I find aesthetically compelling has grown very broad. Still, an authentic portrayal of light and color are the goals whether the subject is the beautiful variation of yellows in a sunflower's petals or gleaming, reflected light on a rain-soaked horse. The body of work that comprises this show represents many of my favorite motifs in the Vermont landscape and a selection of still life's that I completed in my studio. Every time I paint I strive to create something more meaningful than all proceeding work. This show is the culmination of the over 200 paintings created in the last five years, and each of them represents all that I have learned." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edgewater Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday October 9th, from 5-7pm, during the final Middlebury Arts Walk of the 2015 season. Saturday October 10th, TJ Cunningham will be back in the gallery for a live painting demonstration from 1-3pm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "TJ Cunningham: Landscapes and Still LIfes" will be on view at Edgewater Gallery on the Green in October. Dido and Aeneas Opera Company of Middlebury October 16- 18 Directed by Douglas Anderson. Conducted by Jeffrey Buettner. Dido, the Queen of Carthage, entertains the shipwrecked Trojan Prince Aeneas, who escaped from the destroyed city of Troy and was on his way to found a new one. Dido and Aeneas fall in love. Witches plot Dido's destruction and the Sorceress conjures a storm to break out when the royal couple are hunting. The storm duly arrives and one of the coven, impersonating the god Mercury, tells Aeneas he must leave Dido and sail for Italy. Oct 14    Beyond Bullets and Blades
